Chapter 3 of Robert Morris’ The Blessed Life begins with the statement: “Tithing is life, not law.” However, Paul teaches that Christ is our life. (Colossians 3:4) Indeed, Christ Himself declares, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6a ) and “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-27) Yet, Morris emphatically proclaims at least three more times that tithing is life. He goes on to claim that tithing “completely transcends the Old Testament law.” Tithing does predate the Law, but so does circumcision. Morris asks, “If something was right under the Law, is it now wrong under grace?” The answer is found in Galatians 5:2-4:
Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
The life we should lay hold of is a life in Christ. (1 Timothy 6:17-19)
